Dana Corbet Foster Parenting: How I imagined it and how it turned out to be.

I adore children and thought about taking a child from the orphanage, it seems, always. But I was sure that it is very difficult. In addition, all the men I had affairs with doubted that it was worth having children of my own, and the adoptive parents were out of the question. In 2013, I alone raised a fifteen-year-old son, a twelve-year-old daughter and gave birth to another girl with whom I intended to stay home at least until kindergarten.

At the same time, I read many articles. I started watching databases with their photos and video clips taken in orphanages. And finally I thought: since I am still sitting at home with a child, why not take another one and sit with two? It was in the fall of 2014.

Now I am raising not only three blood, but also two foster children, a twelve-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy, and I want to try to tell you how much my ideas about foster parenthood have diverged from reality. Of course, this is only my experience – what I faced myself, and what other people involved in the topic of orphanhood told me: I do not pretend to any global generalizations, I probably do not know something, and I am wrong about something.
